Our journey with food allergies started when my youngest son was 8 weeks old. Two days after his first round of shots he broke out with eczema and it DID NOT go away. At different times the next couple of months I suspected dairy, egg, wheat and soy for different reasons, but never at the same time. Dairy finally became an obvious allergen when I used some formula samples I had to mix up my son’s rice cereal (he was around 5 months).
He pretty quickly started getting red wherever the cereal touched him on his face and he started crying. I took pictures on my cell phone and showed them to my pediatrician the next day. He agreed it could be milk and told us to try again two weeks later. We did and this time he got redder and it happened faster. Our doctor wanted to wait until my son’s 6 month appointment to discuss it more but after a particularly trying weekend with an eczema flare up we decided to see an allergist first.
Lo and behold, my sweet boy tested positive for wheat, dairy, egg, soy, and peanut allergies. I couldn’t believe that it was all of the ones I had suspected–I just knew I had been worrying too much and he would only test positive for dairy! (I never suspected peanut, so that was quite a shock.) Since I am still breastfeeding him I had to go on his diet too. We are persevering but it has been challenging!
My husband and I decided to have our older son tested for nut allergies since his little brother had a peanut allergy and he tested positive for peanut too. Now we carry 2 epipen sets with us everywhere. Never in my life did I imagine that we would be a family with food allergies! However, I do rest in the fact that God is in control and all things work together for our good! We are praying and hoping that our sons will outgrow their food allergies.
